LANTERN COLOR MEANINGS:

YELLOW: have a friend or a family member who has Leukemia or Lymphoma
WHITE: have or am a survivor of Leukemia or Lymphoma

RECOMMEND TO BRING:

  • Small bag (they have free stuff)
  • Money for food
  • Jacket (gets pretty cold at Night)
  • Phone (Don't get lost in the crowd)

EXPECTATIONS:

  • If a student volunteer walking and your getting volunteer hours, be sure to check in with your group. (Supporting or with a particular group check with your coordinator )

  • free cotton candy (only one per person)
  • free lantern
  • stage announcements that thank you for donations, stories of cancer patients, and more
  • After the event, all the nearby food places will be PACKED full of students. Depending on where you eat, the wait time is about an hour. STORYTIME:

Light the Night was a large volunteering event where students from various schools were able to gather. In all honesty, for most students, this was a night to either spend time with friends or reunite with long-time friends. This is probably my last year attending Light the Night was a night to remember. I walked into the event without really a plan. My lunch friends from my school were unable to attend, but an old friend from middle school invited me to go and so I did. Without any expectations of what to come, I simply walked around, searching for familiar faces.

Skipping to the real part!!!
It was dark, the lanterns are lit, and as a group, we started on our walk around the Avaya Stadium. The cool night air staged a wonderfully calm environment. There wasn't a care in the world; I just embraced the moment and relaxed. It was the six of us (old friends) and my brother that walk together that Night. I haven't seen one of my girlfriends from kindergarten in forever, and her smile and ecstatic personality are so contagious. Her arm linked with mine, catching up on everything and what we've been up to lately. Everyone talked as if we've been lifelong friends, that Night we only shared laughter and fun stories. Even though I wasn't in touch with them for so long, I felt comfortable, included, and at ease with them. It was a warm and lovely feeling. I wish I could replicate that Night over and over again and explain it in more vivid detail. After the walk, we went for food at the neighboring mod pizza. I noticed that they notified each other when they needed to go somewhere; they walked a friend back to the stadium in the night, making sure everyone had a ride home and were just being themselves. Everyone was friends, everyone cares for each other, and every person in that group definitely made that night memorable. I couldn't have asked for a better night. Thank you

It is times like these where people should cherish the moment and appreciate the people they have beside them. Don't be afraid to say yes to invitations because you never know what new memories you might make. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them down below.
